Levamisole hydrochloride – 118 mg

Water-soluble powder

Pharmacological Properties

Levamisole is the L-isomer of tetramisole, a well-established anthelmintic with a broad spectrum of activity against gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodes. It is widely used in cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry.

In addition to its antiparasitic action, levamisole is known to enhance the immune response, especially when used around vaccination periods. Its oral administration and high solubility make it easy to use for large groups of animals with minimal stress.

Target Species

Poultry, cattle, sheep, and goats.

Indications for Use

  • In ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats): Effective against abomasal, intestinal, and lungworms.
  • In poultry: Targets both mature and immature intestinal worms (Ascaridia galli) and cecal worms (Heterakis gallinae). Also supports immune function, especially when administered around vaccination times.

Contraindications

  • Not approved for use in lactating animals producing milk for human consumption.
  • Avoid use in animals with severe kidney or liver impairment.
  • Use with caution in animals under stress from recent vaccination, dehorning, or castration.
  • Note: Levamisole is considered relatively safe for use in pregnant large animals when used as recommended.

Undesirable Effects

Generally well-tolerated. However, transient signs such as foaming at the mouth, salivation, excitement, trembling, lip licking, or head shaking may occur in cattle—especially at high doses or when combined with organophosphates. These effects typically resolve within 2 hours without intervention.

Posology and Method of Administration

  • Poultry: 0.2 g per 1 kg body weight, administered via drinking water for 12 hours. Repeat the dose after 21 days.
  • Large animals: 1 g per 15 kg body weight, administered as a single oral dose.

Overdose

Symptoms may appear at higher-than-recommended doses or in combination with other agents such as organophosphates. Clinical signs are usually mild and self-limiting.

Withdrawal Periods

  • Meat:
    • Cattle, sheep, goats: 3 days
    • Poultry: 7 days
  • Eggs: 7 days
