Pharmacological Properties
Levamisole is a synthetic anthelmintic effective against a broad spectrum of gastrointestinal and lung worms. It increases axial muscle tone in parasites, leading to their paralysis and subsequent expulsion.
Target Species
Cattle and sheep.
Indications for Use
Levamidad 7.5% Injection is recommended for the treatment of parasitic gastroenteritis, lungworm infections, and roundworms in the abomasum and intestines. Effective against:
- Lungworms: Dictyocaulus spp.
- Stomach worms: Ostertagia spp. (except inhibited larvae in cattle), Haemonchus spp., Trichostrongylus spp.
- Intestinal worms: Bunostomum spp., Oesophagostomum spp., Cooperia spp., Trichostrongylides spp., Chabertia spp., Nematodirus spp.
Contraindications and Precautions
Levamisole is safe at recommended doses. Overdose may cause temporary motor disturbances such as muscle tremors, head shaking, and increased salivation.
Do not use in animals with renal or hepatic impairment. Avoid use in stressed cattle (e.g., post-vaccination, dehorning, or castration).
Do not administer within 14 days before or after treatment with organophosphorus compounds.
Undesirable Effects
No significant adverse effects reported when used correctly.
Posology and Method of Administration
Administer by subcutaneous injection:
- Cattle: 1 ml per 10 kg body weight (equivalent to 7.5 mg levamisole/kg) as a single dose.
- Sheep: 1 ml per 10 kg body weight (7.5 mg levamisole/kg) as a single dose.
Overdose
No known overdose effects when used as directed.
Withdrawal Period
Do not slaughter animals for human consumption during treatment and for 7 days after the last dose.
This product must not be used in cattle and sheep producing milk intended for human consumption.
